Develop Your Players while Building Your Basketball Offense

[The video clip below is an excerpt from Practice Template 1 in our DVD set, Read & React Clinics: Planning the R&R Practice.]

No basketball coach has enough practice time. So, to get the most out of the court time that you do have, you must learn to collapse time frames. And, of course, we believe that’s pretty easy with the Read & React Offense.

As you move through your Reaction Drills, the habits of the offense will never change, but your player development emphasis can (and should). In the video below, Rick Torbett adds a two foot landing to the finish of the Front Cut drill. That’s an extremely simple addition.

Over the course of the season, though, if you team needs it, you could work on bounce pass mechanics, finishing with pull up jumper, requiring an up-and-under, using a coach with a pad fouling the finish, or a variety of other things. Really, this should be determined by what your team is struggling with or the skills you deem most valuable.

The point is simple: don’t waste this drilling time by working on only one thing. You can get so much more out of these drills if you’ll just stay attuned to your team’s needs and be a bit creative.

By the way, the demo team in this clip is from Crystal Lake, IL and is coached by Tribe contributor Rich Czeslawski. Here is his Bounce Off Drill Series: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
