Control What You Can Control

As a coach, there are only so many things you can (and should) have control over. Former UCONN head coach Jim Calhoun breaks dow the four things you can control as a coach.

  1. Every team can rebound if you put enough emphasis on it
    • Drill it daily
    • Emphasized throughout practice
    • Limit 2nd chances
    • Your defense is judged by your FG% Defense
    • Set a goal of grabbing 40% of offensive rebounds available
    • Set a goal of grabbing 65% of defensive rebounds available
  2. Defense
    • Contest all shots
    • Pressure the ball with help behind you
    • Pressure everything from the NBA 3-point line and in (Adjust for your level of play)
    • Make your opponent shoot, pass, or dribble; don’t let them stand with the ball
    • Force offense where you want them and then keep them there
    • Must get stops when the game is on the line
    • Defend through all of practice, make the defense challenge the offense
    • Have a thought of the day (Example: Nothing great has ever been accomplished without great enthusiasm)
    • Have an emphasis of the day (Example: Rebounding)
  3. Run
    • More possessions per game
    • Allows for more mistakes
    • Allows you to play more kids
    • Run for conditioning and during drills
    • Get numbers to create good shots and create rebounding advantages
  4. Play Hard
    • Steals
    • Charges
    • Make everything competitive in practice
    • Everything is a slice of the game
