A new approach to a rock-solid offense

Teach and Implement the Read & React in Record Speed.

What If...

… YOU WALKED INTO PRACTICE, HUDDLED YOUR TEAM, AND SAID, “We’re working on our offense today, it’s called the Read & React. Do you want to do drills or play games to learn it?”

100% of your players would say, “Play Games, Coach.”

And if you followed through with that choice, making games the main course and using drills as supplements, here’s what would happen…

Players would be more engaged, they’d have more fun, they’d work harder and as a result, they’d get better.

Why?

We’re coaching an instant gratification generation that doesn’t want repetitive drills, wants instant answers, and wants to have fun. They want to play the game, now!

introducing the Read & React Games Approach

Back-to-back D1 National Championship Games, 3 consecutive High School State Championships, D2 Division Championship, International Recognition…

…the Read & React Offense has quite the record.

And it just became easier than ever to implement and train.

We built the Games Approach to create faster buy-in, deeper learning, and accelerated results…and what coach doesn’t want that?

“The Read & React Games Approach makes the game fun again! It provides in-game experience and in-game corrections through a constraints-based methodology designed to hold the attention span of today's youth and their yearning for instant gratification. It gives them the excitement of game play while breaking down specific areas of the offense, all while allowing them to learn through their mistakes. The best part is coaching the skills and actions in real-time, at game speed. Blow your whistle less and enjoy watching your team learn again!”
Colin Lester
MS Boys Basketball
"The Read & React Games Approach helps develop the decision-making skills of players much quicker than the traditional linear method. Players can work on basic skills and strategies in a fun environment that promotes active learning."
Ray Counter
Coach
“This is the most impactful and engaging way to install the Read and React Offence. Players not only enjoy the games-based learning process, but understand the why behind the what, and therefore the time it takes to learn the Read and React is expedited with much greater player retention. Training time is maximized because you can easily skill stack and there isn't a marked transition from drills to play. It's a win-win: both players and coaches love it!”

read & react offense + Small-sided games = fast & easy implementation

Basketball games are unpredictable. You never know what will happen between changing defenses, foul trouble, line-up matches and more.

That’s why game-based practices are far more effective than structured drill-based practices—they train players to learn and function in a game-like environment.

So we leaned on this principle and created a new method to implement the Read & React Offense with ease and speed—The Games Approach.

It not only teaches players in a game-like environment, but it naturally captures players’ attention, engages their problem-solving abilities, and teaches the Read & React in record time.

But what is the Read & React?

Read & React Offense

The best coaches are finding systems to put their best 5 on the floor at any time.

And that’s exactly what’s inside the Read & React—a positionless offense, built on a foundation of structure that allows you to coach and allows your players to make smart decisions based on reads.

We’re not building robots that can run to spots.

Instead, we’re teaching players how to play, how to be instinctive, and how to prove the defense wrong no matter what they do.

coaches are saying...

“What our staff loves about the Read & React is that, when implemented well, it is hard to guard.”
Jan Jensen
Iowa Women's Head Coach
"I have enjoyed learning about the Read and React offense and incorporating it into my offensive system. Read and React teaches players how to play the game instead of making robotic actions that are predetermined. It is a fun offense that allows players to showcase their abilities!”
Lisa Bluder
Former Iowa Women's Head Coach
"Thank you so much for making me a better coach, helping to make a whole generation of children better basketball players and allowing us to consistently beat more talented teams."

MEET COACH RICK TORBETT

Rick has spent over 40 years coaching and studying the game of basketball and throughout the process started Better Basketball (we’re talking back in the VHS days).

After years of providing athletes with the resources to level-up key skills, he launched the product he’s most known for today: the Read & React Offense, often referred to as position-less basketball.

And because of that, he’s had the tremendous pleasure of mentoring coaches at all levels and in more than 30 countries.

His greatest passion is showing coaches how to reach their highest potential on the court.

MEET COACH Nelson Handel

Coach Nelson Handel, a founding member of PGC Coaching and a lifetime member of Better Basketball, has been running the Read & React Offense for over 12 years with middle and high school teams. During that time, he developed and adapted the small sided games and coaching techniques found in the Games Approach course.

After a couple of years traveling the globe, consulting with programs in multiple countries and mentoring coaches, Coach Nelson began a residency at Club Joventut Badalona (a.k.a. “La Penya”) in Barcelona, Spain, where he coaches two girls U18 teams.

Before leaving the States, he was Director of Basketball and Boys Varsity Head Coach at Larchmont Charter High School. During his five-year tenure, his Boys Varsity teams won three League Championships and made final four in two Los Angeles City Championships. The program was promoted two divisions, becoming one of only two schools with less than 2000 students to be ranked in Division 3.
